"Kamancheh in this context is the Persian or Iranian variant of spike fiddle. On this album the Tehran-born kamancheh hero Kayhan Kalhor unveils the shah kaman - a kamancheh development devised by the Australian instrument-maker Peter Biffin ... The Shiraz-born bass santoor player Ali Bahrami Fard also plays a traditional instrument on its way to new sonorities. He plays Persia's traditional hammered dulcimer in the form of "a modern interpretation" of a traditional instrument, the notes state ... The atmosphere overall is light and shade, not gloomy. The Laziest Summer Afternoon and Dancing Under The Walnut Tree confirm that. Both, I assume, are arrangements of traditional tunes or compositions in a traditional idiom"

"He's commissioned the instrument-maker Peter Biffin to invent a larger form of kemancheh which he has dubbed the shah kaman: its tone is darker and more atmospheric, and the sound-world created by this and the bass santour (hammered zither) is richly evocative"
